Definitions of AAFP Prescribed and Elective Credit

Prescribed credit
indicates programs that have received prior approval from the AAFP and have family physician input to ensure relevance to family practice. (The AMA accepts AAFP Prescribed as equivalent to AMA Category 1 credit for the Physicians Recognition Award.)

Programs approved for Elective credit do not require family practice input. Programs not individually approved by the AAFP but which have been designated as Category I credit for the AMA Physician's Recognition Award are automatically acceptable as AAFP Elective Credit. Programs not accredited by the AAFP or designated as Category I credit for the AMA Physician's Recognition Award are enrichment activities, limited to 25 elective hours each three years.
