The Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) course is designed to enhance the cognitive and procedural skills of physicians and other health care providers to effectively manage potential obstetrical urgencies and emergencies during the prenatal period. The course includes a syllabus, lectures and workshops using mannequins for hands-on training. ALSO emphasizes labor and delivery room emergencies but also covers prenatal risk assessment, first-trimester bleeding, consultant relationships, helping parents cope with a birth crisis and information on reducing medical malpractice risk. The course has a manual with the chapters to study, copies of the slides presented, and must be reviewed before attending the course (manuals are shipped approximately 4 weeks before the course to allow adequate study time). The course involves testing and certification status as a provider for ALSO.
